Jessica Chastain may create a little  magic this weekend when Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Mama’ opens for business.  Chastain could possibly be starring in the number 1 and number 2 box-office movies by Monday.  That would make her Hollywood’s favorite color…green…as in dough, Jane Dough!

Riding a wave of critical and monetary success Chastain has appeared and starred in an amazing number of award winning films the past few years, including ‘The Help’, ‘The Debt’, ‘The Tree of Life’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, this week’s box-office champ.  In it Jessica plays a CIA agent on the hunt for Bin Ladin.  Her character is mesmerizingly and compulsively taut and adds greatly to the tension that propels this film at such a breath-taking pace.  It is also a role that earned her a Golden Globe for best dramatic performance.  And now comes Del Toro’s horror thriller, opening this weekend with lots of advance buzz.  This time Chastain plays the reluctant adopter of two of the scariest little girls to ever grace a screen or a scream.  If the trailer is half as creepy as the film then it should be pure gold.  This is one sick mama!

Of course this one-two punch could be upended by another Jane Dough - Jennifer Lawrence – who’s ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ goes into full national release this week.  Lawrence, another Tinsel Town greenie who will be ‘Catching Fire’ in November of this year, shows a deft comedic touch and plays well with Bradley Cooper in this story of life and love looking from the outside in…a different kind of rom-com-dram that garnered ‘The Hunger Games’ huntress a Golden Globe for best performance in a comedy/musical.  Move over Julia and Angelina – these Jane Doughs are rising fast!

Just saw Mama…the little girl is scarier than my little sister and that’s saying a lot!

Chastain had some great work in The Debt…brilliant as a younger version of Helen Mirren.

Always a good omen when the trailer is produced without a hitch ;)

I could be a Jane Dough too…if I was young, beautiful, talented, knew somebody, and wasn’t living in Omaha!

What makes both of them so cool is that neither of them put on airs. I saw an interview with Lawrence and she was talking about cupping her hands over her farts and throwing them at her brothers. Hilarious.

A few short years ago they were both sailing along under the radar. Those days are long gone. Good luck going out for a cheeseburger now without getting stalked.

They were filming Catching Fire in Hawaii when I was there on vacation. I never saw her but I saw a lot of people involved in the film…can’t wait for its release.

Del Toro has had such a connection to animated films and he wrote the screenplay for The Hobbitt. It’s kind of interesting to see his name on a horror film.

I’ll take the comedy over the scare-flick every time.

Everyone is going to be talking about Megan Charpentier as Victoria and Isabelle Nélisse as Lilly, especially Isabelle…she steals every scene in Mama!

Love a good fright-fest…as long as my besties are with me!

Silver Linings is a bit odd, quirky, funny and sad all at the same time…If you like 500 days of Summer you’ll like this – 4 out of 5 stars!

Saw Zero Dark 30 right after the Golden Globes. It was awesome. She really deserves an Oscar to go with the Globe.

Check their body of work 15 years from now. Hollywood is fickle…no ones breaking down the doors to see the Harry Potter gang any more.

First saw Lawrence in a small indie called the Burning Plain…She played the younger version of Charlize Theron’s character and I thought at the time she had stolen the movie. You knew she had something special going on.

I felt the same way when I saw her in Winters Bone!

Don’t know who played the youngest girl in Mama but she was completely damn scary. Too scary. Makes me wonder what she’s like in real life!

Don’t know why the critics liked The Tree of Life…even though Chastain was great as the ever enduring mom. It was so SLOW and boring and didn’t make a lot of sense. Bizarre.

  31. #32 by Guillie on January 20, 2013 - 6:56 am

It’s a bit quirky but I really liked Silver Linings. Thumbs up!
